By: DestiniMyth Idea - Small Scale ProcedureQuestion: Will mixing two different kinds of ketchup in different amounts cause gas to be produced?
Variables: Independent: Amount of ketchup poured into the flask Dependent: How big the balloon gets Constant: Same amount of ketchup in the flask Materials: v Ketchup (2 types of ketchup; 2 bottles each) v Graduated Cylinder (to measure ketchup) v Flask v Balloon Procedure: 1) Get Materials 2) Pour ketchup into graduated cylinder 3) Measure out 15mL 4) Dump ketchup into flask 5) Repeat steps 2-4 for the next brand 6) Put balloon over top of flask (Over the opening of flask) 7) Let it sit out for a week Make observations day after day. Writing down what happened each day

Small Scale Procedure
The Gases of Ketchup
What I am now going to be testing is if ketchup causes any gas at all. My Large Scale Procedure will be if “marrying” them explodes after mixing two brands.
Independent Variable: The brands of ketchup you use
Dependent Variable: How big the balloon gets
Materials:
Two brands of Ketchup
Two Flasks
Two Balloons
One Straw
Graduated Cylinder
Procedure:
  1. Get your first brand of Ketchup, and pour 15 mL of it into your Graduated Cylinder.
  2. Pour your 15 mL of Ketchup (in the Graduated Cylinder) into the Flask, and use the Straw to get it out.
  3. Place the Balloon over the opening of the Flask.
  4. If anything appears to be different as the week passes, write them down in your journal every day.
  5. Did the Balloon expand? You will find out while experiencing the experiment!
Observations:
The ketchup is seperating from the water in the mixture. I just mixed them so I can see if this myth will be busted!
Also, this brings me to my small scale conclusion.\

It has been 2 days since I have mixed the two ketchups together and I have only seen little gas production, but yes, there is gas forming! Tomorrow I will be checking on how it is going and maybe this myth will be busted! Although, one of my old group members is doing the same experiment I am, and her results are not the same as mine!
THIS MAKES NO SENSE!!
Today, April 3, I have found that the balloon has gotten a little bit bigger.
I am thinking that maybe this is true, but you obviously have to keep the ketchup mixed for a while for it to explode.
LARGE SCALE TEST IS STILL IN PROGRESS..........
