We looked up myths onlineand found a myth that sed that coca-cola cand dissolve teeth.

Coca Cola contains citric acid and phosphoric acid which will eat away tooth enamel. A professor Clive M. McCay who did some tests and then said phosphoric acid is a dangerous additive in coke and then it became vivid folklore very fast and what was believed that the coke would dissolve the toth in 2 days. Orville May explained to the head of Coca Cola and top executives that anything containing sugar and Phosphoric acid will dissolve toothd enamel over time. Coke would eat away the marble steps of the capitol building and soften teeth.

Small Scale

QUESTION:Will phosporic acid dissolve teeth?
Variables:
Our independent variable is the type of pop we use.
Our dependant variable is the tooth that we put in the pop.
CONSTAN T VARIABLES:
  • The temp
  • The tooth
  • Amount of pop we put into the cup
  • The cup
HYPOTHESIS: if we put a cow tooth in a ¾ cups of coca-cola then it will dissolve the enamel off the tooth because the phosphoric acid in the pop will make the tooth soft and breakable.
MATERIALS:
  • 1 cup
  • phosphoric acid
  • 1 tooth
PROCEDURE (NUMBERED STEPS) SPECIFIC AMOUNTS OF
  • We get a cup 3/4 full of phosphoric acid
  • Record what the tooth looks like before we out it in
  • We put the tooth into the acid
  • We leave the tooth in the cup for
  • We check on the tooth every morning by putting it on a scale and measuring the weight. We record any of the changes we see in the tooth in our science journal.
CONCLUSION:


Our conclusion for the small scale test is I think that the phosphoric acid did start dissolving the tooth.I believe that it did because after the time in the cup/container for 3 days the tooth started getting squishy and felt like you could split it in half. The concentration of phosphoric acid we used is the same amount of concentration put into coke. Since it is the same concentration of acid I think the coca-cola will do the same thing to the tooth, unless a cow tooth and a human tooth are built different. Our group has wondered if just phosphoric acid itself can dissolve it or does the coca-cola mixed in with it affect how it changes.

  1. We get 4 cups ¾ full of types of coca-cola we brought, cherry coca-cola, coca-cola, and diet coca-cola.
  2. Measure the weight of the tooth before we put it in the pop.
  3. We set the cow tooth in the pop gently for every type of pop.
  4. We leave the cow teeth in the cups of pop for 4 days.
  5. We check on the tooth every morning by putting it on a scale and measuring the weight. We record any of the changes we see in the tooth in our science journal


Large scale conclusion
In our test we found that the pop does eventually take the enamel off but it may take a long time for it to. We weighed the tooth before and after and we saw that the tooth got lighter by a few grams but we do not have enough evidence to prove that the myth is confirmed so we said it is plausable.


We found that our myth is plausable because there is not enought eveidence for us to say it is busted or confirmed, but the tooth did weigh less after 5 days in the cups of pop.
